Gordon L. Hamrick, Jr. of Avondale Estates passed away Thursday April 16, 2015 surrounded by his loving family at Emory Hospice in Decatur. Gordon is survived by his wife of almost 70 years Kay Hamrick, sister Dorothy Wren and children: Kit Veal (George), Gordon III (Cecelia), Christine Neldon (Russ) and George (Kathy). He leaves behind many beloved grand, great and great-great grandchildren and friends. During WWII, Gordon served his country in the 364 Fighter Group, US Army Air Corp. Then he earned a BA in accounting from the University of Alabama. In 1948 he joined Arthur Andersen and Co. as an auditor and later became Partner. His abilities led him into electronic computer programming and later consulting. He was the founding partner in Atlanta for the computer consulting division that is known today as Accenture. He worked on the first commercial application of an electronic computer installed in the Utility Industry (Commonwealth Edison Company, Chicago) and the first retail credit card in Atlanta for Trust Company (now Suntrust). In 1968, he became VP and Controller for Belvedere Builders in Decatur. Later he helped establish Plumb-it-Co with his sons. For many years, he was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon then Elder and in the General Assembly. He was instrumental in leading efforts that moved church philosophy to support and accept integration in the early 1960's. He was a founding member of the First Existentialist Congregation. He joined the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta. He believed in community service and was an Avondale Community Club officer. He formed many discussion groups meeting regularly over several decades and was a member of the American Legion. In lieu of flowers donations to Mountain View Personal Care Home, 3675 Kensington Rd., Decatur, Ga 30032. A celebration of his life will be at Avondale Pattillo UMC, 3260 Covington Hwy, Decatur. Visitation at 10 am followed by the Memorial Service at 11 am . Interment to be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta.
