Mr. Henry S. Rogers III, age 84, of Tucker, GA passed away on Thursday, May 8th at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry S. Rogers Jr. and Virginia Cooper Rogers of Oxford, GA and his sister Carolyn Rogers Simons of Covington, GA. Henry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Brenda P. Rogers; his daughter, Melinda R. Sparra; his son-in-law, John P. Sparra; his grandson, Henry S. Sparra; niece Debbie Smith and family; and nephew Bill Wiley and family.
He was born at Emory Hospital and his family lived in Decatur until they moved to Oxford, GA in Newton County. From elementary age he spent his summers at Athens Y Camp in Tallulah Falls, GA growing from a camper into a counselor. He always credited this camp for teaching him integrity and character, Henry chose Young Harris Junior College after Newton County High School. Young Harris (and the friends made there) always had a special place in his heart.
He spent many years serving on the alumni board, one term as President, guiding others toward the school. He finished his undergraduate degree at Emory University in Atlanta where he met many life-long friends in the Sigma Chi brotherhood. He continued his education at Emory Law School and was married during his second year.
After their wedding and his law school graduation, Henry and Brenda spent time in Worchester, MA with the Army reserves. They returned to the Atlanta area and settled in Tucker, GA. They joined the fellowship of North Decatur United Methodist Church. At NDUMC, they were devoted members of the Seekers classroom which became a bedrock of friendships. Henry joined Lawyer's Title Insurance Corporation where he served as State Counsel for thirty years and retired as Vice President. During his tenure at LTIC, he was an active member of Southeast Land Title Association where he served as president from 2003-2004 and was named Title Person of the Year in 2007. After retiring from LTIC, he was wooed back into the working world as Real Estate and Title Counsel for the Commercial Real Estate Department and the Banking, Business and Finance Department of Bryan, Cave, Leighton, Paisner (formerly Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy). Even though he loved his work and was a pillar of knowledge and integrity in the law profession, it was the people he valued most.
After his second retirement, he devoted his time and attention to family and friends. He cheered at every baseball game from pee-wee to 18U unless he was traipsing around the world climbing the great wall of China, cruising the Greek Isles or admiring great monuments, such as Mount Rushmore, around the USA.
Henry battled an illness for two years. Until his last moments, he was surrounded by loving friends and family. Henry's latest adventure is to scout out heaven and make sure the travel arrangements are acceptable for the rest of us. Looking forward to a huge bear hug when we see him again!
