Hushang M. Payan, MD (1925-2024)
Beloved grandfather, father, father-in-law, uncle, teacher, colleague, and friend, Hushang/Hank passed away at the age of 99, March 26, 2024.
After completing his residency training in New York City, Dr. Payan served as Assistant Professor of Pathology at New York Medical College, subsequently becoming Director of the Laboratories at the Veterans Administration Hospital affiliated with the School of Medicine West Virginia University in July 1965. Three years later he was appointed Director of the Lab, Bell Memorial Hospital, Ishpeming, MI, where he established the Bell Memorial Research Foundation that served as the springboard for numerous research articles as well as the many case reports he had published in the medical literature throughout his career; he also served as Chief of the Hospital Medical Staff, and member of the Board of Directors, as well as president of the County Medical Society.
After more than 30 years in medicine, he retired to Pittsburgh with his wife Irene and wrote his memoirs as well as continuing his research and writing, although now he focused mainly on history, religion, and poetry -- giving multiple lectures to the local Medical Society, as well as publishing several books, including original poetry. He very much enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
His beloved wife of 43 years, Irene, preceded him in death in 2018. He is survived by his daughter, son, grandsons, niece, and nephews. Dr. Payan will be remembered at a celebration-of-life at sea June 2024, Lake Michigan.
