Iris Kern

Iris Kern was born on May 10, 1939, in New York, the second of two-daughters born to Diana and Benjamin Kern. She died on June 17, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Iris spent much of her youth in Washington, DC.

She attended the University of Iowa for undergraduate studies and went on to earn her Masters and Doctoral degrees in subsequent years.

iris's academic background spanned from Art History to social work and sociology.

Iris worked as a professor for many universities including Howard University and The University of District of Columbia.

In addition, Iris provided licensed counseling for individuals and groups seeking mental health, and wellness support.

Over the years, Iris also found pleasure in her work as a producer and talk show host for live radio programs that focused on sociopolitical issues.

Iris married and divorced Michael Shapiro and they had two sons, Bennett and Douglas (Scott) Shapiro.

Her third son, Simeon Drew Needham was welcomed in her second marriage to William Needham.

In the 1980's iris moved with her family to St. John, USVI where she lived for more than 35 years before moving to Atlanta for health reasons.

There is the Virgin Islands, she created and managed, The Safety Zone, and organization and shelter for women negotiating a variety of challenges resulting from issues of domestic abuse. Iris was also active in local politics.

Iris is survived by her children, stepchildren, niece and nephews, and a host of relatives and acquaintances.

She is preceded in death by her son, Simeon Drew and her husband, William Needham as well as her sister, Roberta and their parents.
