Jacqueline Elizabeth "Jacquie" Bott Scott, of unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, succumbed to complications from a stroke on Tuesday, May 5th at Sunrise of Decatur. Jacquie, the daughter of John Joseph Bott (deceased) and Mary Cecelia "Betty" Murphy Bott (deceased), was a native of Kingston, New York, where her mother's family had been landholders and real estate developers since the early 1800s. She moved to Miami, Florida in 1967, where she met her husband, Thomas "Tom" Scott (deceased). After their marriage in 1969, they moved to DeKalb County, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Jacquie graduated in 1962 from Trinity College, Burlington, Vermont, with a Bachelors of Science. She was a medical technologist until the birth of her third child. While her children were young, she worked as the library secretary at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and then parish secretary for Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. In 1990, Jacquie was elected as DeKalb County Commissioner for Super District 6, a seat she held for two terms. She was subsequently elected to represent District 3 for one term in 1998 prior to her retirement in 2002.
Over the years, Jacquie served as a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Council; a member of the Flat Shoals Alliance; a member of the Democratic Women of DeKalb; a member of the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County, in which she held several board positions, including President; a director of the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Georgia; Presiding Officer of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners; and was a member of the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. As a resident of South DeKalb for 50 years, Jacquie was a strong advocate and supporter of the South DeKalb community. In 2015, the League of Women Voters of Georgia awarded Jacquie with the Eleanor Raoul Greene Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her decades of work as a public servant, both as an elected representative committed to being responsive to and engaged with her constituents, and by facilitating voter education and engagement through her volunteer work
Jacquie is survived by her children, Susannah, John-Thomas (Vivian), and Christopher (Courtenay), all of DeKalb County; her grandchildren, Parker and Bronlyn Scott of DeKalb County; her sister, Mary Cecelia Alise, of Dracut, Massachusetts; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Betty Bott; her husband, Tom Scott; her son, Loring McAllister Scott; and her sister, Susan Elizabeth Wexford. She will be remembered fondly by many for her dedication to and love for her family, her commitment to her community, her love of the arts and travel, and for her Coca-Cola red lipstick and nails.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jacquie's name to the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County and the League of Women Voters of Georgia.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, May 17th at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 48 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Atlanta. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Parker's on Ponce, 116 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur.
