James "Jim" Edward Flynn Jr. - beloved father, grandfather, and brother - passed away peacefully in his home in Atlanta, Georgia on July 10, 2026. Jim is survived by his three children, Jennie, James, and Sarah, seven grandchildren, Hailey, Anelise, Will, Marlowe, Barrett, Vinny, and Walker Mae, and his three siblings, Michael, Karen, and Les.
Jim was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 31, 1947, the second of four children. He spent his early years in the city, playing stickball, cheering for his beloved Yankees, reading, and dreaming big. He eventually left Brooklyn, spending his final high school year living in Miami, Florida, with his grandmother, Sarah, with whom he was always very close.
In 1964, at age 17, Jim enrolled in the Army and was immediately placed in Intelligence. He served for four years during the Vietnam War, during which time he was stationed in Japan and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
After his service, Jim began his academic journey at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, where he obtained an Associate's Degree. He then moved upstate in Ithaca to attend Cornell University, from which he graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in History. In 1972, Jim moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University Law School, where he received his J.D. in 1975. He lived the rest of his life in his adopted city, and his parents and siblings all eventually moved to the Atlanta area as well.
Jim's long career was marked by his sharp mind, his business acumen, and his sense of adventure. He worked as a litigation attorney, a stockbroker, an investment banker, and finally corporate counsel. He retired in 2024 from Cape Environmental Management, a company he had worked with and for in various capacities since its inception in 1991.
Jim was a voracious reader and writer, an avid music fan, a supporter of ballet and the arts, and a world traveler. During his life, Jim visited six continents and dozens of countries. He saw hundreds of concerts and ballet productions. And he read thousands of books.
But nothing brought Jim more joy than his family, and he gave his family just as much joy. He was kind and caring, thoughtful, insightful, dependable, and warm. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
