Listen to Obituary

Jerry "Giddy" Henderson Cooley passed away peacefully last Friday, surrounded by the love of his family. A man of deep faith, quick wit, and endless generosity, Giddy spent his 89 years living fully and joyfully.

Giddy was born on August 28, 1936, in Knoxville, TN. In high school he was voted "Most Fun to Date," a title he happily upheld for the rest of his life. He attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship and later served proudly in the United States Air Force. He married his high school sweetheart, Joy Thornton Cooley, and together they raised three children and welcomed ten grandchildren into their lives.

He was first christened 'Giddy' by his grandson Bryan, and it stuck immediately. From that moment on, he wasn't just Jerry. He was Giddy to everyone who loved him, a name that captured his playful spirit and his devotion to his grandkids.

For over 60 years, Giddy made his home in Decatur, Georgia, where he was deeply involved in his church and community. He gave his time and talent to church BBQs, on mission trips overseas, at the Georgia Aquarium, at races, as an election official, at the Georgia State Capitol, and as the community's unofficial tech support.

Giddy loved adventure, travel, fishing, sweets, children, animals (especially his beloved dog Maddie), and telling stories -many of them invented on the spot. He was a devoted and enthusiastic grandfather, known for his kindness, humor, and constant presence in his grandchildren's lives.

Guided by his faith and known for his irreverent sense of fun, Giddy brought light and laughter wherever he went. His family takes comfort knowing he is now at peace, reunited with his daughter Beth, and surely sharing a story or two in heaven. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Jerry is survived by his wife Joy; his sons Jay (Michelle) Cooley and Scott Cooley; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Cooley Jordan.

His family will gather privately at Oak Grove United Methodist Church to commend him to God's care.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Giddy's memory to make a donation to The Madge Watson Mission Fund.
