John (Jack) Edward Newell of Decatur, Georgia passed away peacefully on March 28, 2024 at the age of 91.
Jack was born in the Bronx, New York on May 21, 1932 to Edward and Winifred (Shields) Newell of Co. Galway, Ireland. He attended Xavier High School in Manhattan and was a lifelong supporter of his alma mater. Jack earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Columbia University and a master's degree in meteorology from New York University. He was a captain in the US Air Force and met his beloved wife Tsuyako (Sugai) while stationed at Matsushima Air Field in Japan. He worked as a meteorologist for the US Weather Service for his entire career after leaving the Air Force and lived in Temple Hills, Maryland and Ashburn, Virginia before moving to the Atlanta area.
He was preceded in death by Tsuyako and his partner, Ooyang (Jane) Chang. He is survived by his four children, Ed (Mary) Newell of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Catherine Newell Long of Manhattan, Kansas, Jean (Reggie) Harris of Decatur, Georgia and Richard Newell of Decatur, Georgia, and by his beloved grandchildren, Cassandra Newell, Sara Newell, Matthew (Lily) Long, Aaron Long, Kayla (Mike) Mays and Kyle (Kevin Do) Adams.
Interment will be at Georgia National Cemetery in Camden, Georgia.
