John Kimsey York

John Kimsey York, Jr., 80, passed away on June 13, 2023 in Atlanta, GA.

John was born on June 14, 1942 in Atlanta, GA to J. Kimsey York and Mary Mitchell York. He graduated from Sylvan Hills High School in 1960 and went on to complete course work at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He then began a 51+ year career in Broadcast Engineering, working his way up to Director of Engineering for WPBA TV Channel 30 (formerly WETV)Public Broadcasting Atlanta and WABE FM 90.1. John was inducted into the NATAS Southeast Chapter Gold Circle for more than 50 years of Outstanding Contribution to the Television Broadcasting Community. He also received the Angelo R. Ditty, Jr & Frank McLemore Broadcast Engineer Award for Excellence in Broadcast Engineering by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. He was a lifetime member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.

John married Patricia Ann Smith on October 6, 1967 in Atlanta, GA. They had one daughter, Carole York Davis.

John was best known for his sense of humor, witty disposition and ability to fix almost anything he came across. His smile was as big as his stature and his personality filled up the room. He had a lifelong love of technology and was present on the forefront of the industry, welcoming all new advances with a sense of wonder and "what's next?" He was Chairman of the Board of Deacons of Northside Park Baptist Church where he attended faithfully for years.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Smith York, daughter Carole York Davis, son-in-law SGM (Ret) Ronald Dan Davis, Jr, brother-in-law Robert E. Smith (Bob), cousin Kitty Welborn Panell and a lifetime of treasured friends and extended family.

John was preceded in death by father J. Kimsey York and mother Mary Mitchell York.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, June 16,2023 at 1 pm at A S Turner Funeral Home. There will be a visitation 1 hour prior to the service. The interment will follow the service at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga.
