John O'Connor

October 11, 1947 — June 24, 2024

John Francis O'Connor died on June 24, 2024, at the age of 76 at his home in the Holbrook retirement community in Decatur, Georgia. He was born 1947 in the Bronx, New York.

John enjoyed sports, playing baseball in his youth and golf throughout his life. He particularly liked watching sports and playing cards. He was a collector of antiquarian ceramics and maps and enjoyed keeping up with archaeological and popular science news.

John had a long career in public service. He served in the US Army and worked for many years in the Federal Government.

John is survived by his daughter Jean (Joseph Durbin) O'Connor of Decatur, Georgia and his son Christopher (Lisa) O'Connor of Rapid City, South Dakota, his three grandchildren Laura Dubin and Catherine Durbin of Decatur, Georgia and Logan Brueckner of Portland, Oregon, his sister Maureen O'Doherty of Bellerose, New York, and his sister Rita (Theodore Schell) O'Connor of Manhattan, New York, and his sister-in-law, Ava O'Connor of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents John J. and Rita M. O'Connor, his brother William O'Connor, and his brother-in-law, Joseph O'Doherty.

His family thanks the many caregivers, nurses and doctors at the VA, his assisted living facilities, and Capstone hospice who cared for him in his final years and days.

No services will be conducted at this time, and a private burial will later be held at a National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or other memorials, his family would appreciate donations be made in memory of John to the Archaeological Institute of America ( https://www.archaeological.org/donate/ ) or Disabled American Veterans ( https://www.dav.org/ ).
