Joseph Frank Payne, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 101. Born on May 14, 1923, in Temple, Georgia, he was the firstborn child of the late Ahaz and Agnes Alena Cole Payne.
After graduating high school, Frank joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he gained practical experience as an electrician apprentice and enlisted in the Army Reserve. He briefly attended Georgia Institute of Technology, then his Army unit was activated for World War II, where he served in the Signal Corps, specializing in setting up communication stations across the North Atlantic.
After returning home from the War, he met and fell in love with Sara Strickland. He was working for AT&T setting up long distance communications throughout the Southeastern United States at the time and would continue to work for AT&T for his entire career. He and Sara married in 1946 and enjoyed a long marriage together.
He took an early retirement, which allowed Frank to frequently enjoy his passion for golf. He and his wife, Sara, shared an enthusiasm for travel, with Sara's meticulous planning skills making each adventure unforgettable.
For many years, Frank was an active member and deacon in his church. He enjoyed delving into the Word and teaching Bible study and Sunday school classes for much of his life.
Frank is survived by his son Joseph Payne, Jr and his wife Deanna, granddaughters Rhiana Pfaff (Gary) and Katherine Katz (Gabriel), great granddaughters Gracie and Clover Pfaff, sisters Audrey (Jeter), Kennethe (Cotterman), and Yvonne (Miller); and many more loving family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Sara (Strickland), his wife of 64 years; sisters Christine (Campbell), Jewel (Harrington), and brother Ferd.
Services for the family will be held graveside at White Chapel Cemetery.
