Joyce McDonald

Mrs. Joyce McDonald, age 96, passed away on August 18, 2026, leaving a lasting legacy of love, family, service, and devotion.

Joyce was born on February 1, 1930, in St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies, to the late Samuel and Edna Richards. She was preceded in death by Samuel York Richards and Vincent Richards and is survived by Lillieth Reid and Eric Richards.

In March 1966, Joyce came to the United States seeking greater opportunities and a better life for her family. Through hard work and sacrifice, she built a life devoted to caring for others and supporting those she loved.

Joyce served as a Certified Nursing Assistant at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. After retiring in 1989, she continued serving through volunteer and community work. Her faith remained central to her life as a member of Spirit and Truth Sanctuary, reflecting her values of love, kindness, compassion, and service.

Joyce was the beloved mother of eight children. She was preceded in death by William Earle, Glenmore McDonald, and Avril Hendricks-Hamilton. She leaves to cherish her memory Arthur, Paula, Margaret, Susan, and Carol; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren, along with her siblings, extended family, and many others whose lives she touched.

At the heart of Joyce's life was her family. As its matriarch, she was strong-willed and outspoken, yet nurturing, kind, deeply loving, and reassuring. She helped raise generations, offering guidance, support, and care while being present for life's milestones and everyday moments.

Joyce enjoyed sewing and altering clothing for family, as well as tending her garden and flower beds. She especially loved the gold calla lily, whose brightness reflects the warmth and light she brought to others.

Joyce's 96 years were defined by service, family, faith, and love. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her strength, kindness, wisdom, and love will live on through generations to come.
