Julia Wynne

October 18, 1928 — May 2, 2025

Julia Weathers Wynne, age 96, died peacefully at her home on May 2, 2025, following complications from a fall. Julia, a lifelong resident of Atlanta, was born on October 18, 1928, the only child of Charles Valentine Weathers, Jr., and Dorothy Padgett Weathers. After graduating from Druid Hills High School in 1945, she attended Wesleyan College and Agnes Scott College, where she graduated in 1949.

In 1950, she married Don Raymond Wynne, Jr., a marriage lasting 50 years until his death in 2000. While staying busy raising four children, Julia and Don were active in their church and the Druid Hills-Emory community, where she lived her entire life. At the time of her passing, Julia was the longest-standing member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Julia was a cherished source of knowledge on the histories of Glenn Church, the Druid Hills community, and Atlanta, often sharing anecdotes and insights with friends and newcomers to the area.

A devoted mother, Julia provided her children with love and support throughout their lives. After her youngest child reached school age, Julia earned a Master's degree and a Specialist degree in Education from Georgia State University, while embarking on a long and dedicated career teaching grades K-3 in DeKalb County, most notably at Montclair Elementary School. Though she officially retired in 1995 due to her husband's ill health, Julia later returned to the classroom as a frequent and beloved substitute teacher at Montclair, continuing into her mid-80s.

While she jokingly observed that school officials may not have realized just how old she was, she remained an active and valued educator until her "second" retirement. Julia was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority throughout her teaching career and retirement.

Julia's friendships spanned decades dating back to her early days as a student. She and a special group of Wesleyan friends maintained lifelong bonds, gathering for more than 70 years after their college days. Julia was also blessed with wonderful friends from her teaching days, her church, and the Atlanta and Emory communities, including those from Springdale Road and Clairmont Place, where she spent her later years. Julia enjoyed being with her extended family, traveling across multiple continents, attending concerts, and playing Rummikub with friends.

Julia was predeceased by her parents, husband, youngest son, Brian Weathers Wynne, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Mott Wynne. She is survived by her children: Charles Stephen Wynne (Dancy) of Gainesville; Dorothy Helen Wynne (Nancy Walla) of Spotsylvania, VA; and Don Raymond Wynne, III (Kelley) of Brentwood, TN; five grandchildren: Sara Wynne Billingsley (Jacob), Julia Wynne Jones (Bryan), Stephen Harper Wynne, William Gordon Wynne, and Elizabeth Bonnell Wynne; and five great-grandsons: Wynne, Thompson and Reid Billingsley and Charlie and Hoyt Jones.

Her Celebration of Life service will be held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, 1660 North Decatur Road, Atlanta, GA at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, with a reception in Glenn's Fellowship Hall following the service.
