Mr. Kofa Swen, affectionately called "2-zay", was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend whose life touched countless people across Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the diaspora. He peacefully transitioned from this life on August 3, 2025, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Born into the Gray, Swen and Toh families, Kofa grew up with a strong sense of family, responsibility and community. He was known for his humility, warmth, quiet strength and qualities that would shape the way he related to everyone around him.
Kofa pursued his secondary education at the St. Mary's Catholic High School, Duala, Bushrod Island, Monrovia, Liberia, where he became an alumnus of the renowned Alpha Class, 1984. His years at St. Mary's not only prepared him academically but also gave him lifelong friendships and a foundation of discipline and resilience. It was also there that his athletic gift shone brightly.
A basketball legend, Kofa was celebrated for his skill, determination and sportsmanship. His influence on the court made him a role model to many aspiring athletes, and his legacy in sports continues to inspire the younger generation. Yet beyond his achievements, it was his humility and encouragement of others that set him apart.
As a family man, Kofa was deeply devoted to his children-Lenard S. Swen, Agnes T. Swen, and Christopher S. Swen-and his grandchildren and extended family. To his siblings, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, he was not only a brother, uncle and grandfather figure, but also a confidant and encourager, always ready to offer advice, support, or simply a listening ear.
His path led him from Liberia, where his roots were deeply planted, to Ghana, where he got married to now ex-wife Christina T. Swen, and eventually migrated to the United States, where he settled in Decatur, Georgia. Each move reflected his resilience, adaptability and determination to create better opportunities for his family while keeping close ties with loved ones back home and abroad. While in the States, he was a devoted and hardworking professional who spent over 15 years at Publix, earning the respect of colleagues through his commitment and integrity. In the years leading up to his passing, he brought that same dedication to his role at Amazon, continuing to exemplify excellence in all he did. His warmth and selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Kofa's life was one of quiet grace and unwavering love. Whether with family, friends, or colleagues, he carried himself with dignity and left a mark of kindness and faithfulness. His presence was felt not only in his household but also in the wider circle of friends and loved ones who cherished his company.
He leaves to mourn his mother, Madam Teplah K. Toh; his children as mentioned prior, his siblings: Adrian B. Swen, Amos K. Snyper, Angeline T. Kingston, Beatrice B. Sirleaf, Brendalyn M. Landford, Christopher S. Gray, Edwin H. Landford, Eugene J. Swen, Lawrence S. Swen (predeceased), Cornelia F. Swen, Daniel M. Swen, Patrick B. Swen, Dennis S. Swen, S.Odell Swen, Delphina W. Swen and Cyrano K. Swen, several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a wide community of friends across Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the diaspora.
Though he is no longer with us physically, the memories of his laughter, strength and love will forever remain in our hearts. Kofa's journey reminds us that a meaningful life is not measured by years alone but by the lives one touches, the encouragement one gives and the legacy one leaves behind.
