Lattie Garrett

Lattie Stancil Garrett, 91, of Stone Mountain, Georgia passed away peacefully at home on June 20, 2026. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Garrett, also of Stone Mountain; grandson Joshua Bar-Haim of Atlanta and his wife, Ryan; and grandson Caleb Bar-Haim of Atlanta; as well as cousins, nephews, and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Garrett, Jr.; son, George E. Garrett, III; and daughter, Beth Garrett Bar-Haim.

Lattie was born in Newton County, Georgia on November 17, 1934, the only child of Ralph Dewey Stancil and Ethel Glenn Stancil. Her parents adored her and treated her with special care. As an only child, she cherished time spent with her many cousins. Her family moved to Atlanta where she graduated from Roosevelt High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in History from Georgia State College for Women.

During two summer seasons following her sophomore and junior years of college, Lattie made the trek to Yellowstone National Park where she worked in the Old Faithful Lodge. She treasured her time at Yellowstone.

Lattie met her husband through mutual friends. They married in 1960 and established their home in Decatur, Georgia, where they raised their family together. They were married for almost 40 years until her husband's death. While she worked professionally as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company for over 20 years, her most significant roles were wife, mother, and grandmother. Her strength, calm demeanor, and gentle manner created a loving and warm home for her family. She was an excellent listener and amazing encourager for her family as well as others with whom she came in contact. She considered her children's friends to be her own children. In later years, when asked her name she replied, "just call me Granny" . . . a grandmother figure to all.

Lattie was a member of Parkwood Hills Baptist Church for over 60 years where she taught an adult Sunday School Class for over 30 years. Weekly research and preparation for teaching was an important part of her life. She also served as a deacon for the church. She placed her faith in Christ as young girl and grew as a believer throughout her life. She drew great strength from the Bible. Her thoughtful prayers were a blessing to others.

She was an avid reader and lifelong seeker of more information. She never tired of learning something new. She was always thrilled to engage in discussion, especially on two topics about which she was passionate: history and nutrition.

Lattie had a sweet Southern accent. She was truly gracious, always displaying great peace even in difficult circumstances. She will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 12:00 noon at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road in Decatur. The funeral will begin in the chapel at 1:00 p.m.
