Remembering Leonard Wolcott Hagerman
September 7, 1939 - June 25, 2023
Husband, father, brother, uncle, brother-in-law...
Born third of five; a big brother to two and a younger brother to two - the quintessential middle child;
Earlier known as a stylish dresser with Johnston & Murphy wing-tipped loafers; later known for plaid shirts, blue jeans and a butterfly belt buckle - his signature attire;
Known as an artist and writer, award-winning graphic designer, and occasional middle-school set designer;
A Grady High School graduate - voted best looking his senior year - and number 27 on the football team; a Georgia State graduate by way of UGA; and a U. S. Coast Guard reservist;
Known to have a fondness for the Varsity, chili dogs, peach pies and frosted orange drinks;
Known at home for delicious salmon patties and chocolate milkshakes;
Most comfortable in a Ford Courier, Ranger and Sport Explorer - each of which were driven to the bitter end; but a Volkswagen Beetle and Vanagon also made appearances in the driveway;
Early days of fishing - first catches almost always mounted, no matter the size - and camping were part of his landscape; alongside Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, soccer, baseball and, later, basketball and competition cheerleading;
Known to walk several miles a day several times a day, regardless the weather, and always stopping along the way to talk to neighbors;
Always happy to see his family;
A young father of three, trying to figure out how to be a father, and not always getting it right, but an older father of one, with more experience under the butterfly belt buckle;
Known for his unconditional love, although not always demonstrated or known - to his children - as witnessed over a 43-year span;
A man from a generation where roles were established by society who became a man comfortable with his own identity, reaching for new experiences, never imposing his values on others and accepting people as they are; and unconditionally supportive of the women in his life;
Known as a diehard fan of Cheers, with much of the dialogue memorized, Seinfeld and Modern Family, alongside The Andy Griffith show and Hee Haw; a huge fan of Broadway musicals; and a reliably loud singer in church, especially if it was Amazing Grace;
-----------
A man who preferred the backroads over the highways to any destination, and who chose the backroad at the end, taking the days as they came and always enjoying a good nap. Rest in peace dear husband, father, brother, uncle, and brother-in-law, knowing you were loved by so many.
