Catherine Martin Van Valkenburg, 84, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, in Tucker, GA. Born August 1, 1938 in Savannah, GA, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Braxton and Virginia Collins Martin. Catherine grew up in Savannah, graduated from The Westminster Girls School in Atlanta, and attended Emory University.
On March 20, 1957, she married Chase Van Valkenburg Jr. They lived in Decatur and later Avaondale Estates. Chase and Catherine were devoted members of Decatur First United Methodist Church for many years and centered their life together on faith, family, friends and community. A teacher and lifelong servant to others, Catherine was known for her giving spirit and compassionate heart. She worked for many years with children and adults with cerebral palsy, at the Atlanta Cerebral Palsy Center and at the Gatchell School. Catherine was a member of the Junior League of Decatur, and served in multiple roles at the local school PTA.
Upon retirement Catherine and Chase moved to Savannah where they became very involved in the community and enjoyed traveling the world.
Catherine is predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, Chase, and her son, Chase Van Valkenburg III.
She is survived by her daughter, Eve Van Valkenburg of Atlanta; grandchildren, Captain Henry Andrew Leeuwenburg IV and his wife, Molly of England, Mollie Leeuwenburg of Atlanta, Franklin Van Valkenburg of Virginia, Randy Van Valkenburg of Atlanta, Lucy Van Valkenburg of Atlanta; and great-grandson, Chase Pacas.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
