Mary Jane King of Atlanta, age 73, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023. She was born to John Argyle King and Jane Whitten King in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Mary Jane spent her early childhood in Gadsden, Alabama, which was her father's hometown. Her family moved to Atlanta when Mary Jane was eleven years old. She attended Druid Hills High School, where she was an honor student and National Merit finalist. As a high school senior, Mary Jane was the winner of the Atlanta and Georgia Junior Miss pageants. At the National Junior Miss pageant in Mobile, Alabama, she was presented with the award for the top academic achievement. Mary Jane was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Agnes Scott College. She later received a Master's Degree in English literature from Emory University.
Mary Jane enjoyed a long career in public relations in the Atlanta area. During her employment with the Canadian Consulate in Atlanta, she was proud to participate as a host to Canadian visitors and athletes at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. An animal lover, Mary Jane enjoyed volunteering at Zoo Atlanta, where she gave presentations with exotic animals to visitors and school groups.
She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at the Decatur Cemetery on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at 1:00 PM.
