A beautiful soul was lifted to be with our Lord on August 4, 2023 at the age of 80. A devoted daughter, a loving big sister, "Auntie Mo" to so many nieces and nephews and the dearest friend to those she loved and who loved her. Maureen Claire McGovern was born March 2, 1943 in Columbia, Tennessee. As the daughter of an FBI man under J. Edgar Hoover, Maureen moved along with her family to many states including Manhattan, NY., Washington, DC., Atlanta, GA., Knoxville, TN., Kansas City, MO. and then back to Atlanta where she lived until her passing this week.
Maureen graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School in 1961 and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she majored in Business Administration. She enjoyed her life on campus and was a proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Maureen joined the Internal Revenue Service in 1969. She held several positions including Group Manager and Disclosure Specialist and received many commendations for her excellence in a 34 year career. Upon retirement, Maureen was a loving and devoted caregiver to both her parents. During this time, she thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world. She visited many States but especially enjoyed her overseas travel, with Ireland, the home of her ancestry, Nova Scotia and Rothenburg among her favorite adventures. She was an avid swimmer all her life and enjoyed many extended summer vacations in Florida at Ormond Beach with her good friends.
Maureen is predeceased by her parents, James Lenahan and Beatrice Murphy McGovern, her niece, Maureen Decker and brothers-in-law Garry Hill, Sr. and Bill Decker. She is survived by her two sisters, Carole Ann McGovern Busch and Peggy McGovern Cook (Ron Cook), her best friend and housemate, Brenda McLeroy, along with several nieces and nephews, Dr. Jim Busch (Jenn), Brian Decker (Mary), Angie McWhirt (Michael), Carrie Moore (Charlie), Garry Hill, Jr. (Laura), Jonathan Hill (Liz) and Kellen Yarbrough (Matt Belvin). She is also survived by twelve great nieces and nephews who she adored in her role as "Auntie Mo" and was designated as the Matriarch of the McGovern Clan after the death of her parents. Christmases were a special time, and she probably wrapped 100 or more packages every year to the delight of all her recipients!!!!
Maureen was a true Irish lass. . . she loved her heritage and she lived it proudly. Her faith was deep and rich and all her family rejoice in knowing she is in the arms of our loving Lord.
