Maureen Kelley Glass, age 82, passed away at home in Decatur, Georgia, on June 16, 2024, due to complications of primary progressive aphasia. Born in Fairfield, Alabama, Maureen first attended the University of Alabama. In 1962, she traveled from England to Norway and immersed herself in Norwegian culture through nannying in Oslo. She later earned a BS at the University of Houston where she managed to balance her studies while working in the Rice University library and raising her then two-year-old son John.
Later, Maureen moved to Atlanta and worked at Georgia Tech for over thirty years. She started as a clerk typist in the College of Management and was quickly promoted to the Associate Dean's assistant. After a year she moved to the School of Polymer, Textile and Fiber Engineering where she became an administrative manager, performing a variety of jobs including school newsletter writer, school photographer, conference coordinator, manager of student assistants and staff, and assistant to the director.
After retirement, Maureen founded the Georgia Tech Silver Jackets, a retirees association open to faculty and staff. She became first president of that group, which is still active.
Maureen enjoyed travel, photography, volunteer work, and loved not only her own adopted cats and dogs, but insisted on caring for her neighbors' pets whenever they traveled. Friends reflect on her ability to play with words, expressions, and puns.
Maureen is survived by her husband Frank Starling Glass; two sons Peter Kelley Bowers and John Kidd Bowers and his wife Sheri Lense Bowers; two grandchildren Genevieve and Gabriel Bowers; three nieces Susan Kelley Ulrich, Patricia Kelley Mitchell, Sharon Kelley Yamamoto; and two long-time friends Shari Crooks Sadler and Patricia Glore.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Herbert Kelley, a metallurgist; her mother Mildred Roberts Kelley, a bank officer; and her brother T. Patrick Kelley, an industrial engineer.
Her celebration of life will be held on June 27, 2 PM at A. S. Turner & Sons 2773 N. Decatur Rd. Decatur, GA 30033. Casual attire.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to PAWS Atlanta, a no-kill animal shelter and pet rescue, 5287 Covington Hwy, Decatur, GA 30033
