In Memory of Mercedes González
Mercedes Fernandez de González, a woman of strength, resilience, and boundless love, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on January 24, 2024 at the age of 97. Born near Orense, Spain in 1927, Mercedes embarked on a journey that spanned continents leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched.
Mercedes's story unfolded as she moved to Argentina in 1950, where fate introduced her to the love of her life, Jose Maria González. They celebrated their union in 1964 and welcomed two daughters, Claudia Alejandra and Rosana Andrea, into their lives in Buenos Aires in 1967 and 1971, respectively.
In 1978, seizing an opportunity for a brighter future, Mercedes and Jose courageously relocated their family to Atlanta, Georgia. A devoted wife and mother, Mercedes transitioned from being a stay-at-home mom in Argentina to working tirelessly at two jobs, ensuring a promising future for her family.
Her journey was not without challenges, but Mercedes and Jose triumphed in providing their children a foundation for success. Never tired from helping to raise seven grandchildren and tending to her beloved garden filled with vegetables and hostas, Mercedes became a source of inspiration and strength.
Mercedes is survived by her husband, Jose Maria González of Watkinsville & Milton, Georgia, her daughters Claudia (Alex) González of Watkinsville, Georgia, and Rosana Johnson (Timothy) of Milton, Georgia. Her legacy continues through her exceptional grandchildren: Maximillian Sides, Nicolas Sides, Anna Johnson, Olivia Johnson, Natalia Sides (fiancé Eric Richter), and Victoria Sides Clark (Spencer). She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Cristina Sides.
A tireless matriarch, Mercedes believed in hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Though we mourn her physical absence, we find solace in knowing she was a woman of great faith and hope in the Lord.
Hers was a life well-lived, marked by accomplishments, love, and unwavering determination. You will be remembered Mama, Lela, and yes, Mercedes. Your teachings will resonate in our hearts forever.
