Ofelia Margarita Artime Montejo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at the age of 95 surrounded by loved ones and family. Born in Camagüey, Cuba on February 22, 1931, the youngest of six, she entered a family built on strong foundations of their Catholic faith and love for each other.
During her teenage years she caught the attention of the love of her life, Raúl Montejo and five years later they were married on March 19, 1952, on the feast day of Saint Joseph. Exactly one year and a day later her pride and joy arrived with the birth of her only daughter, Ofelia Caridad, affectionately known throughout her life as Ofelita.
In 1968 after the oppression of communism proved too great a risk to raise their daughter in, she and her beloved husband made the decision to pursue freedom and the hope of a better life and future for their family in America. She settled in Atlanta, Georgia to be close to siblings and extended family that had made the migration before them. The selfless decision to start a new life in a foreign country with language barriers afforded her daughter and future generations that followed, opportunity to live the American dream.
Always conscious to keep their cultural heritage alive, Ofelia and her husband served as founding members of the Atlanta Cuban Club. A community that became a home away from home for many Cuban immigrants longing for comfort from a beloved country and customs they were forced to leave behind. One of her favorite annual celebrations was the Carnaval party where you could find Ofelia wearing traditional handmade Cuban dresses and dancing the night away with Raúl. The Conga dance was their favorite.
Ofelia enjoyed playing cards with her family; Continental and Canasta were her favorite games. She was an excellent cook and nobody could turn down a taste of her infamous Capuchino desert, a sweet treat often shared at the Cuban Club.
Relying on her faith and devotion to the Virgin Mary she was part of the choir led by renown Cuban pianist Enrique Chía, in the annual celebration mass for Our Lady of Charity, hosted at the Cathedral of Christ the King.
She will always be remembered for her strong will, determination, steadfast faith in God, and devout love of her husband, her only daughter, her four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all.
Ofelia is preceded in death by her parents Enrique Artime and Angela Ferrín, her five siblings Manuel Artime, María Quiñones, Enrique Artime, Graciela Artime, and Mario Artime. She is survived by her loving daughter Ofelia Montejo Magid (Kevin), her four grandchildren whom she adored Jon Magid (Lisa), David Magid (Asli), Ryan Magid (Meghan), and Stefanie Magid Spivey (Trey). She is also survived by eight great grandchildren; Kevin Magid, Alex Magid, Garrett Magid, Jon Magid, Sophia Spivey, Fiona Magid, Will Spivey, and Claire Magid.
A Celebration of Life mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Brookhaven, Georgia on Friday, May 29th at 11:00 am. She will be laid to rest at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery in Tucker following the mass.
