Decatur - Patricia Tiernan Monahan, 92, died peacefully on January 14, 2026. Pat was born September 1, 1933 in Passaic, NJ, daughter of Irish immigrants, Patrick and Agnes Kilgallon Tiernan. She grew up in Passaic and worked at Look Magazine in New York City during the "Mad Men" era. She married Harold Monahan in 1956, moved to Pompton Plains, NJ and became a homemaker. The family moved to Martin's Landing subdivision in Roswell, Georgia in 1969 where Pat raised their four children and made lifelong friends. She embraced exercise, walked, cycled, played tennis or swam daily. Pat rejoined the work force as a paralegal for Met Life Real Estate and worked a second job at JC Penny to help support her children, three of whom graduated from Emory University. After retirement, she moved to Decatur, GA to be closer to her daughters and continued to swim at least a mile a day with her swimming friends in Dunwoody. She was an excellent cook and a gracious hostess who never met a stranger, regaling them with her stories of NYC in the late 1950's. Pat was relentless in her pursuit of corporate entities (i.e. utility companies, appliance companies) who she felt were not treating her fairly (LOL). As a native of New Jersey, she became a fan of Bruce Springsteen and loved listening to his music in addition to traditional Irish music. She lived independently until December 2024 when she moved to Montclair Assisted Living. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by sisters Ann O'Dea, Marie Jarkesy, Eileen Flood and daughter, Julie Monahan. She is survived by her son, Dr. Michael Monahan (Kristen), and daughters, Nora Monahan Harris (Jay), and Madeline Monahan Mittelhammer (Paul); grandchildren, Caitlin Monahan, Conor Monahan, Patrick Harris (Jessica), Christopher Harris (Madeline), Megan Mittelhammer; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Charlotte Harris. The family would like to thank Pat's caregivers at Montclair Assisted Living, Personal Care, Inc. and Allie Fulcher with Amazing Grace Hospice. A funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church located at 2855 Briarcliff Road, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30329 on Saturday, January 31,2026 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so are asked to make contributions to Catholic Charities Atlanta at catholiccharitiesatlanta.org or to Amazing Grace Hospice at amazinggracehospicecare.org.
