Philip John Wainwright

Philip Wainwright was born to Arthur and Betty Wainwright in Oxford, England and emigrated to the United States as an eleven-month old. He graduated from Shamrock High School and went on to receive a BA/MA from Emory University and a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University. He returned to Emory University in 1996 and spent his career of 28 years at Emory building international programs for students to study abroad, international students to come to Emory for study and research, and world-renowned faculty and scholars to bring their expertise to Emory's campus. He created the Global Services unit at Emory, providing operational support to Emory's myriad research and academic efforts around the world, making particular advancements in the university's engagement with India and Ethiopia. He was a loving husband and proud father known for his kind, gentle nature, ready laugh, and quick wit. He cherished his family, loved music, hiking and strategy games, and relished discussing world affairs. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Janet Donohoe, two sons William and Thomas Wainwright, a brother Martin Wainwright (Christine) and two nieces Elizabeth and Alexandra Wainwright.
