Sofia (Sonja) Nemirovskaia of Decatur, Georgia passed away on June 18, 2026. She was born on December 27, 1945 to Alexander Naishtoot and Hava Liderman in Kyiv, Ukraine. She graduated from Kyiv University with a degree in Romance and Germanic Languages in 1969. Sonja moved to the United States with her husband, Vladimir, in 1994. She lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in Decatur, Georgia. She also visited for extensive periods of time France and Germany, and traveled to many other countries. Sonja worked as a librarian in Kyiv, Ukraine and at Albuquerque Academy in the US. Sonja was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister deeply devoted to her family. She had lifelong friends since the time she lived in Ukraine and made many more friends during her years in New Mexico and in Georgia. Her house was always open to her neighbors and their kids.
Sonja was passionate about arts and literature and had a deep knowledge of art history. She was an avid collector of art history books as well as poetry books, especially, 20th century Russian poetry. While traveling with her husband, Vladimir, in Europe and in North America, she visited the best art museums and galleries in the world multiple times, spending there endless hours and studying the masterpieces she already read about in her books. Sonja was also very interested in photography and she made thousands of photos, reflecting history, culture and natural beauty of places where she lived and where she visited.
Sonja is survived by her husband Vladimir, her son Stanislav, her grandson Denis, her sister Lala and her husband Yura, her sister-in-law Luda, her nephews and her cousins. Her love of life, kindness and generosity will be missed by everyone who knew her and she will be remembered by her family, her neighbors and her friends in many corners of the world.
