Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dr. Susan Ellen Katrin announces her death from Alzheimer's Disease on March 20, 2026. She passed with her dear friends and family by her side.

Susan was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 12, 1943. She was the daughter of Margaret Michel and Abraham Katrin, and the granddaughter of Jacob, Sarah, Henrietta, and Leon, all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her brother Robert Katrin, her child L Katrin, and her dearest friend Dr. Sherry McHenry.

Susan graduated from Brooklyn College, received her MA in Speech Therapy from the University of Michigan, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia. She was a professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University for 35 years, and was also in private practice in Atlanta, GA. Susan stressed the importance of education and she was a lifelong learner herself. In her work, she consistently focused on helping others reach their best and fullest potential. She was a sought-after mentor who championed the growth and celebrated the accomplishments of her students.

A lover of life and an avid traveler, Susan was drawn to the beauty of nature and the ocean and explored all seven continents with her loved ones. She was endlessly compassionate and kind and never said no to a dog or cat in need. Over the course of 15 years, Susan and L rescued and fostered hundreds of stray animals. Susan possessed an innate ability to make anyone laugh, with her wonderful and often silly sense of humor.

The family is grateful to all the staff at Orchard Senior Living for their wonderful support. A special thank you to Jim Fox, whose care for Susan over the past 5 years kept her connected to herself and the world. Her ashes will be scattered in nature as she requested. In lieu of flowers, Susan's family asks you make a donation in her honor to an animal shelter in your area or the Alzheimer's Association.

We shall forever miss her infectious laugh, glorious smile, and her being in this world.
