After a tragic accident on Clairmont Road in Decatur, GA, Susan died on April 16, 2026 at Emory University Hospital. As an organ donor, she was a miracle for several critically ill patients. Our family prays for all those that she helped will have a complete recovery. The decision to be a donor was completely Susan's, made seven years ago. It was her nature to care deeply for others both known and unknown. She was a caretaker for her grandparents and all their friends, taking them for their luncheons, shopping and doctor visits. She often pestered her parents about their health...our doctor's appointments..in detail.
Susan was born at Emory University Hospital in May of 1973. She lived in High Point, NC, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary School (1st to 8th) and Central High School. (9th-11th) She played basketball at both schools and also enjoyed ballet lessons. She transferred to Shamrock High School in her senior year and graduated in 1991. She then attended Emory University and graduated with a degree in Political Science/History in 1995.
She always said when we asked why she took on "service" work instead of a better paying job with her degree that "Emory made me a great conversationalist." So, her final position was a deli clerk at Publix on Ponce de Leon in Atlanta. It was physically painful work for her, but she enjoyed her coworkers, her customers..and as we found out, saw the same chiropractor for twenty years.
Susan is survived by her parents, Steven and Judith Smith, 3 brothers: Russell (Karen), Brooks (Jen), and Scott (Jana), many nephews and nieces.
Her memorial service will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1433 Highway 64 West, Hayesville, NC on Friday, May 15, 2026 at 12 noon. A reception will take place following the service in the Sister Terry Martin Fellowship Hall. Inurnment will be at a later date in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Murphy, NC.
Gifts in Susan's memory may be directed to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Clay County, NC in care of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, P.O. Box 546, Murphy, NC 28906.
We pray that Susan, our sweet girl, will find a well deserved rest surrounded by God's peace and love. Amen
