Mrs. Virginia Rose Ellwood, 92 of Decatur died July 3, 2012. She was born in Atlanta to Harry and Claudia Rose in 1920. She grew up in Kirkwood and often reminisced about taking the trolley with her twin sister Dorothy to Murphy High School. After she was married, she and her friends made weekly trips to Rich's for some 20 years. Always busy, she loved sewing and was a member of the Medlock Homemakers Club. After making clothes for all of her children, she began sewing for her grandchildren and made beautiful blankets or bibs for any new babies she happened to hear about. Her greatest love was for her family and she expressed that love often and clearly. Her generosity elicited chuckles as she would not allow a child or grandchild to leave her house without tomatoes, apples, pie or whatever was fresh from her kitchen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert Ellwood. Survivors include daughter Linda Champion and her husband Dale of Marietta, son Charles Ellwood of Marietta, daughter Karen Nichols and her husband Chuck of Decatur, daughter Julie Barnhart of Dahlonega: two grandchildren Tyler Smith of Decatur and Logan D'Eramo and her husband Adam of East Atlanta and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons. Rev. Greg Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any humane society.
