William Leon (Bill) Purcell of Decatur passed away on May 16,2024. He was born to Jack and Elizabeth Long Purcell in 1929. Bill grew up in the Kirkwood area of Atlanta where he attended Tech High and graduated from Murphy High School as President of the Student Government. He was an avid tennis player. Graduating from Georgia Tech in Civil Engineering in 1954, Bill was commissioned in the Army Engineering Corps. He served in Germany and upon his return home, Bill joined the Georgia National Guard retiring after thirty-three years with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served his country with honor and dignity.
Bill began his career with the Georgia Railroad while in the co-op program at Georgia Tech. He moved to the Georgia Department of Transportation and served the State for over 30 years. Upon retirement Bill and his wife Elsie began their extensive travels in the United States and Europe. He was a master at planning wonderful trips and at his favorite hobby, photography. Many delightful memories of family and travel are archived in his photos.
Beginning as soloist at Kirkwood Baptist Church, Bill sang in many church choirs. He was called upon for every family member for weddings, funerals and Christmas performances. He was soloist for Mount Carmel Christian Church for many years. An accomplished pianist, he loved his God and raised his voice to sing in praise at every opportunity.
Elsie and Bill married in 1951. Elsie was the love of his life, and they were totally devoted to one another through almost 73 years of marriage. The love and support each gave to the other was amazing. Bill will be remembered for his beautiful smile and his delightful humor which eased the path of so many. His cards and beautifully written letters of support are treasured by many.
Bill was pre-deceased by his daughter Valerie Purcell. He is survived by his wife, Constance Elsie, his son, Jeffry Purcell ,and his daughter, Melanie Purcell (Ron Spain) of Stone Mountain, two grandsons, Joel Purcell and Christopher Purcell of Lilburn, and sister-in-law Janet Granade of Stone Mountain.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Bill's favorite charities: National Wildlife Federation, online or at P.O. Box 1583, Merrifield, VA 22116-1583, or PAWS Atlanta, 5287 Covington Hwy, Decatur, GA 30035 or the charity of your choice.
